چکیده

1. A cotton wick probe has been used to measure the pressure in subcutaneous interstitial tissues of man. 2. The probe was inserted with minimal trauma into a plane of natural dissection at the level of the deep fascia in three sites: dorsum of the hand and foot, and the forearm. 3. The pressure was subatmospheric on every occasion (mean pressure : hand, -3-015SD 0.50 cmH,O; foot, -3.545SD 1-74 cmH,O; forearm, -2*41+SD 0.85 cmH,O). 4. Taking the three sites together, there was a positive correlation between wick pressure and locally measured tissue temperature (r = 0.55; P<O-Ol), but when each site was analysed separately the relationship was significant only in the hand. 5. Wick pressure rose when the subcutaneous tissues were warmed. 6. A negative correlation was observed between wick pressure from the forearm and the subject’s plasma colloid osmotic pressure (r = 0.73; P<O.OI), but no such relationship was observed in the hand or foot.

Measurement of interstitial 'fluid' pressure by means of a cotton wick in man and animals: an analysis of the origin of the pressure.

1. A method for measuring interstitial 'fluid' pressure by using a wick consisting of long-stranded cotton wool at the interface of the tissue is described. 2. A correct measurement of hydrostatic fluid pressure was obtained when the wick, connected to a suitable transducer, was applied to filter paper in which the channels contained fluid at a known subatmospheric pressure. 3. A mean subatmosp...

Effect of Topical Anaesthetics on Interstitial Colloid Osmotic Pressure in Human Subcutaneous Tissue Sampled by Wick Technique

OBJECTIVES To measure colloid osmotic pressure in interstitial fluid (COP(i)) from human subcutaneous tissue with the modified wick technique in order to determine influence of topical application of anaesthetics, dry vs. wet wick and implantation time on COP(i). MATERIAL AND METHODS In 50 healthy volunteers interstitial fluid (IF) was collected by subcutaneous implantation of multi-filamento...

Isolation of interstitial fluid from skeletal muscle and subcutis in mice using a wick method.

Until recent years, mice were sparsely used in physiological experiments, and therefore, data on the basic cardiovascular parameters of mice are lacking. Our aim was to gain access to interstitial fluid and thereby study transcapillary fluid dynamics in this species. Using a modified wick method, we were able to isolate interstitial fluid from subcutis and skeletal muscle in mice. Three-strande...

Measurement of the Interstitial Pressure in Subcutaneous Tissue in Dogs

A probe consisting of a cotton thread fitted inside a 15-cm Teflon tube with an inner diameter of 0.8 mm and connected to a transducer was used to measure the interstitial pressure in the subcutaneous tissue in six anesthetized dogs. The measurements were reproducible with a standard deviation of ±0.64 mm Hg. In six dogs the mean pressure in the subcutaneous tissue of the thorax was —2.74 mm Hg...

Interstitial hypertension in head and neck tumors in patients: correlation with tumor size.

Elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) is associated with poor blood supply and inadequate delivery of drugs to solid tumors. IFP was measured in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck region in humans using the wick-in-needle technique. In all lesions (n = 19), the IFP was elevated (4-33 mm Hg). Furthermore, the IFP increased with tumor size. The highest IFP was 33 mm Hg in a 24-ml ...
